Google rules! There are so many tools available through Google to be explored.
Google Maps, Google Earth, Synonym Search, Dictionary Definitions,Spell Checker. One that I'd never seen before was Google Sites. It's a free and easy way to create your own website.
I've been asked this question numerous times over the years...how to create your own personal website.....I will definitely share this with customers from now on.

Online Productivity Tools
I really appreciated learning more about Google Docs, love the fact that they are free, web-based and available from any computer. I can see using these tools and saving myself money by not purchasing the traditional MS products.
Will be using at home for sure.

Flickr and YouTube
While there is great entertainment value in both Flickr and YouTube ( hours and hours) they are also a bit like crack very addictive, not that I'd know from personal experience.
There is some usefulness to the content of Flickr but I find disturbing that the proprietory rights of the content and photos are held by both sites rather than with the poster.

LibraryThing
I liked LibraryThing because it did have practical applications to use either @ home or work.
I like the feature Wishlist which is handy to track books I'd like to read ( a feature that was lost when we migrated from Dynix). I really appreciated the fact that I could keep track of books I've read, including character names. Very handy to keep track of series.
I also appreciate other features such as reviews, ratings and recommendations.
Would I use it? Definitely at home but I'm not sure I'd have the time at work.

RSS
I decided to be the rebel and go straight to RSS, and leave Google Universe for next time.
I found it very easy to set up RSS feed. It makes information gathering much more convenient than Favorites because it's web-based as opposed to desk top specific;
making it convenient to access information anywhere you are.

The latest assignment was to explore Facebook, the social networking site.
I have a Facebook account at home that I created on a whim so that I could view friends and family's accounts. I have never used it beyond that, don't keep it current nor does anyone, and I do mean anyone, get to be my friend. For that reason I will not be registering for a Facebook account, it feels like an invasion of my privacy. I don't want to be remembered long past my lifetime for what I've left behind on a Facebook account.
I can see what the fascination for some people is with Facebook. It allows people to make connections with family and friends. You can become part of a community of like-minded people whether through similar interests, activities or affiliations. You are also able to make connections to places, things, experiences or anything you care about.

Wicki
What is it that I know something about? A profound question, one that puzzled me and had me digging deep into the cobwebs of the past. In a good way!
Once I thought of a subject it was very easy to find the pertinent article; it had proper spelling, grammar and was factually correct. However, I was able to add a fact I found through an official website. I found that the editing process was very easy to do.

Delicious or not?
I explored Delicious and saw many tagged items that were very interesting. I understand that it makes favorite sites accessible to all staff on any computer, also, you can personalize information as it relates to your interests. However, there is very little for children to use other than the tag Homework. Hopefully, that will change as staff become more comfortable with Delicious.
One thing I did experience is that the site being explored will just disappear, an experience that others have had. It can be a little awkward to browse through but like anything I'm sure it will evolve. Just like us at CPL!

In the beginning
When I started working in libraries card catalogues were the only way to access books and library cards were filed in drawers. That was 30 years ago, we've come a long way baby!
When I moved to CPL, I had to learn how to use the latest in technology GEAC's on-line catalogue. Many systems later here we are in a brave new world of technology that presents many possibilities to one and all. I hope that CPL 2.0 will introduce me to the newest forms of communication, accessing information and keep the old brain sharp too.
